The Giants Of Life

Giant

“There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God lived with the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.” – Genesis 6:4.

The Bible teaches that, at one time, there were giants living on the earth. Some have speculated that the “sons of God,” spoken of in this scripture might have been angels who decided to have sexual relations with earthly women, thereby producing giant offspring! We don’t know for sure, but it’s an interesting subject.

The most famous giant in the Bible was Goliath. He was over 9 feet tall and there’s no telling what he weighed. He was so big that he could carry a spear who’s head alone weighed 25 pounds! As with many large people, he was also a big bully. Being a Philistine (an Arab?), he naturally hated Jews and he took great pleasure in taunting the armies of God for anyone who thought they were big enough and tough enough to take him on. For awhile, it looked like there were no takers and then David, a young shepherd boy, rose to the challenge! He rejected the armor of his friends and opted for a sling-shot, the favorite weapon of any shepherd. It was small, but capable of flinging rocks at tremendous speed. David had already been to the brook and collected several Round, River, Rocks for his purpose. Last year, I stood in this very brook (which was dry at the time) and imagined David carefully selecting the stones he would need to defeat the giant.

We all know the story of how Goliath took one right between the eyes and created the famous slogan, “the bigger they are, the harder they fall!” But, what can we learn from this saga? If you’re older that 15, you already know about the “giants of life.” There are many things in our lives that seem to be so insurmountable that we could easily call them giants. It might be our finances; our marriage; our children; or problems we created or that others created. It might be our enemies or our job. Whatever your “giant” is, you know how difficult it is to wage war with it. One of the things I found out about David was that he loved the Lord and seemed to have absolute confidence and trust in Him. That was pretty apparent as he boldly walked out on the field of battle, alone and under-powered. His conviction was, “who does this unclean Philistine think he is to defy the army of the Living God!” Personally, I like the way he stuck up for God even though God probably didn’t need anyone to stick up for Him. I happen to think God liked David’s attitude as well.

I also like the way David put his Faith on the line. All of us say we love the Lord and would do anything for Him, but when the chips are down, do we mean it? Several years ago, I was out on the golf course playing with someone who was pretty sure God’s last name was “damn!” I had to have a little talk with him over on hole number 6 about it. Fortunately, he responded to my counsel.

What are you going through? Are there giants in your land? Are they big and mean and ugly? Do they stink? Do they cause you to tremble in your shoes? Do they shout and brag and do they seem to be enticing you to “come out and meet your doom?” Well, the same God who was with David that fateful day on the battlefield is the same God who is LIVING INSIDE YOU today! He’s the God of love and power and strength Who loves His children. He’s the God Who is your source and He loves you. He’s the God you can trust to go out onto any battlefield with you!

The next time you hear the boasts of your giant railing you from the field of battle, pick up your slingshot and walk boldly out to meet him! Your God will not fail you!
